Me: Hey everyone and this is @ The Buzzr. Welcome to the premiere episode of a series in which we'll get to know Buzzr in a certain way. We'll dsicuss your favorite game shows, the hosts who do it and the people that make a classic game show....well, classic. So sit back, grab a snack and get ready, you're @ The Buzzr with the first subject....
Match Game has held a history starting in 1962 on NBC. All it did was have you & 2 stars match answers to reach a certain score to win the game. Today, we'll focus on the 1973-82 version.
When CBS had a revival in Match Game after TPIR went on the air in 1972, the concept was to have 2 players on one side and 6 celebrities to match answers in 2 rounds to have one person win $5000. At first, it sounded like a good idea to have Family Feud-style questions in its early years, but once it became humorous, it was more funny & raucous at times. With remakes as one-half of a particular hybrid with the Hollywood Squares in 1983, another with Ross Shafer in 1990 and Michael Burger in 1998, it seemed that the humor in those remakes were a bit staler to watch. But with Gene Rayburn's classic version, it was okay with the program once being the #1 daytime show at the time. When I return, we'll look at the classic panel and a new addition that left one panelist behind.

Right now, we have to give you the results to our Buzzr Beater question. I will explain why in a minute. The question was.....

The real thing why Match Game became successful was its panel. Starting 1st, it was the male person. Usually Gary Burghoff or somebody else. 2nd & 3rd positions went to Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly. The real reason they were part of the panel is because they were like Burns & Allen. These 2 really stuck it out until the very end. The 4th position went to a young starlet who tells little jokes, but get answers quickly. The 5th would be Richard Dawson. Many contestants in the head-to-head match prior to 1978 chose him to help players win a lot of dough which lead to being the widely picked panelist in the group. The 6th would be a semi-regular like for instance Betty White or Fannie Flagg, but gets a more humorous answer. By 1978, things changed....
The invention of the Starwheel helped contestants double the money. It led to Richard Dawson's departure because he was doing Family Feud at the time, and the show was off the air by 1979. But syndication didn't give up hope for it. With the addition of a weekly PM show starting in 1975, 1979-82 was the time in which a syndicated version was shown. There were plans for a 1985 version, but Gene Rayburn refused to do it because tabloids revealed his age at the time, so it was brought back in reruns with nighttime TPIR in. But the 1973-82 version is something we can all remember.
