Paula Rhodes: Already kind and rewounded to tape this show from Periscope Plaza where Nicole Arbour was last seen putting on makeup in the ladies room, it's @ The Buzzr. Now here he is, the master of everything buzz, and monogram inventor, Pierre.......KELLY!

Me: Hi everyone. This is @ The Buzzr. Your world of Buzzr in one go. So act like you know and let's go with....

Letters in a block.

It was 1942 when an Danish mathematician inventied a game entitled "Hex." The object of the game was to  take turns placing a stone of their color on a single cell within the overall playing board. The goal for each player is to form a connected path of their own stones linking the opposing sides of the board marked by their colors, before their opponent connects his or her sides in a similar fashion. The first player to complete his or her connection wins the game. The four corner hexagons each belong to both adjacent sides.
Since the first player to move in Hex has a distinct advantage, the pie rule is generally implemented for fairness. This rule allows the second player to choose whether to switch positions with the first player after the first player makes the first move.

That spawned many variants and in 1980, Steve Ryan took that board using hexagons and letters of the alphabet combined with this unsold pilot.....

And when I return, how the 2 got together and married a game show.

We stop here to give you results to our Buzzr beater question which was....

If I were to go on LMAD, I would win........what?

Only 2 people chimed in and it was the almighty dollar....which is C-A-S-H of course. We'll have another question at the conclusion of our next segment.

So in 1980, the 2 were fused together by Steve Ryan to create......

And by 1980, that and Las Vegas Gambit kicked David Letterman's show out. Ironically, Letterman would end up being a late night legend, but back to Blockbusters. The object was to answer questions using letters of the alphabet like....What P...or what A and so forth. Also, to make things fair, G-T enabled a handicap to find out if 2 heads are better than one. Here's what the board looks like.....

The red player is designated as the single player, and he/she must answer to create a vertical connection from red to red. On the other hand, the white player known as the family pair must win, too. Their job is the same, but at a horizontal connection from white to white. Whichever side wins 2 games goes on to the gold run for $5000. Here's an example of why.

Running until 1982, the show attracted big money winners like John Hatten, Leland Yung and the McCarthy sisters. Bill Cullen was the MC for this game and had his first Emmy nomination for it. Not to mention its kick-you-know what theme song done by Bob Colbert.

Although they did it again in 1987, it was only 2 players instead of the handicap, having all-graphics as a game board instead of an actual one and Bill rafferty was the host. It was however, short-lived, but the Cullen version is one we can all relate to.

The Buzzr Beater question happens to be that of.....this.

"If I were playing Blockbusters, I would be on...." What? It's a finish the Sentence problem you have to solve in 2 weeks time. Good luck.

And with that, the block party's over. Thanks for telling us all about Blockbusters. Not the video chain one. If there is any questions about the show, or would like to suggest a show or a host, please reach me on Facebook at : Pierre Jason Kelly, or @Johnny_Arcade on Twitter and we'll explain. Until then, it's PK signing off and we'll see you.....@ The.....
