Paula Rhodes: Getting close to a live show from Periscope Plaza where Bree Olson once made out in the ladies' room, it's @ The Buzzr. Now here he is, the master of everything buzz, Pierre.......KELLY!

Me: Hi everyone. This is @ The Buzzr. Our subject is a recent loss of a legend.

Born James Edward Dooley in New Jersey, Perry started out as a singer in Special Services after college (University of Pennsylvania), working on Armed Forces Radio during the Korean War. After the service, he worked for a short time at General Electric and then replaced Eddie Fisher as the staff vocalist at Grossingers in the Catskill Mountains and later did comedy working with Sid Caesar as his straight man for several years (which included a three-year stint with Caesar in Las Vegas). These were under his birth name of Jim Dooley. Due to a name conflict with AFTRA, he adopted his mother's maiden name of Perry when he began his television work.
While briefly attending Pleasanton High School in Pleasanton, California, Perry was an outstanding basketball player thanks in part to his height (at 6'4"); he graduated in 1952. He was often nicknamed "Big Jim" because of his height.

After this, the career of Jim Perry in TV.

For the Buzzr Beater question, we asked you which side you wanted in Blockbusters? Neither one of you chimed in and had to put it up twice, so I apologize. Back with this:

Jim first became a TV game show host in Canada to do "Fractured Phrases" in 1965. Including a few more in Canada, Jim also was a disc jockey at WABC from 1969 to 1972, and by 1974, he did "Definition" in Canada as well. He even presided the Miss Canada pageant until 1990, but by 1978.....

He held a job doing a Mark Goodson game shoe entitled Card Sharks until 1981. And by 1983....

He was the host of $ale of The Century until 1989 and did a syndication series in 1985.

Although retired in 1990, he moved to Oregon with his wife, but the Friday before Black Friday, he died of cancer. He was 82 years old.

Our Buzzr Beater question has something to do with his 2 shows. Do you prefer Card Sharks, Sale or both? It's on the right side of the blog and you'll be given 2 weeks to do it.

Thank you so much for paying tribute to a deceased game show legend who has left this earth. If you have any questions about Jim's career,  or would like to suggest a show or a host, please reach me on Facebook at : Pierre Jason Kelly, or @Johnny_Arcade on Twitter and we'll explain. Until then, it's PK signing off and we'll see you.....@ The.....

Paula Rhodes: Already kind and rewounded to tape this show from Periscope Plaza where Nicole Arbour was last seen putting on makeup in the ladies room, it's @ The Buzzr. Now here he is, the master of everything buzz, and monogram inventor, Pierre.......KELLY!

Me: Hi everyone. This is @ The Buzzr. Your world of Buzzr in one go. So act like you know and let's go with....

Letters in a block.

It was 1942 when an Danish mathematician inventied a game entitled "Hex." The object of the game was to  take turns placing a stone of their color on a single cell within the overall playing board. The goal for each player is to form a connected path of their own stones linking the opposing sides of the board marked by their colors, before their opponent connects his or her sides in a similar fashion. The first player to complete his or her connection wins the game. The four corner hexagons each belong to both adjacent sides.
Since the first player to move in Hex has a distinct advantage, the pie rule is generally implemented for fairness. This rule allows the second player to choose whether to switch positions with the first player after the first player makes the first move.

That spawned many variants and in 1980, Steve Ryan took that board using hexagons and letters of the alphabet combined with this unsold pilot.....

And when I return, how the 2 got together and married a game show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n-1BuWSXVE

We stop here to give you results to our Buzzr beater question which was....

If I were to go on LMAD, I would win........what?

Only 2 people chimed in and it was the almighty dollar....which is C-A-S-H of course. We'll have another question at the conclusion of our next segment.

So in 1980, the 2 were fused together by Steve Ryan to create......

And by 1980, that and Las Vegas Gambit kicked David Letterman's show out. Ironically, Letterman would end up being a late night legend, but back to Blockbusters. The object was to answer questions using letters of the alphabet like....What P...or what A and so forth. Also, to make things fair, G-T enabled a handicap to find out if 2 heads are better than one. Here's what the board looks like.....

The red player is designated as the single player, and he/she must answer to create a vertical connection from red to red. On the other hand, the white player known as the family pair must win, too. Their job is the same, but at a horizontal connection from white to white. Whichever side wins 2 games goes on to the gold run for $5000. Here's an example of why.

Running until 1982, the show attracted big money winners like John Hatten, Leland Yung and the McCarthy sisters. Bill Cullen was the MC for this game and had his first Emmy nomination for it. Not to mention its kick-you-know what theme song done by Bob Colbert.

Although they did it again in 1987, it was only 2 players instead of the handicap, having all-graphics as a game board instead of an actual one and Bill rafferty was the host. It was however, short-lived, but the Cullen version is one we can all relate to.

The Buzzr Beater question happens to be that of.....this.

"If I were playing Blockbusters, I would be on...." What? It's a finish the Sentence problem you have to solve in 2 weeks time. Good luck.

And with that, the block party's over. Thanks for telling us all about Blockbusters. Not the video chain one. If there is any questions about the show, or would like to suggest a show or a host, please reach me on Facebook at : Pierre Jason Kelly, or @Johnny_Arcade on Twitter and we'll explain. Paula Rhodes: Live....well not quite from Periscope Plaza right across the street from a school where Life Is Strange was filmed here, it's @ The Buzzr. Now here he is, the master of everything buzz, The man who pays attention behind the curtain, Pierre.......KELLY!

Me: Hey there and Welcome to @ The Buzzr, your guide about Buzzr in a nutshell. We talk about the hosts, the game shows and everything in between. So let's stop talking about it and let's talk about.....

Dealing.

Monty Hall was doing Video Village up in NYC in which 2 players tackled a board game similar to that of the 90's game Peer Pressure. By the time he moved to LA, he wanted to produce some shows. Examples were Chain Letter and Your First Impression. But by the last month of 1963, this happened.....

That turned out to be Let's Make a Deal. The object was to trade what you don't like for something nice.....or something worse like.....zonks. They're worthless prizes like animals, old cars and stuff. The top 2 dealers traded in one more time for the big deal of the day picking one of 3 doors. Carol Merrill modeled the prizes and Jay Stewart was Monty's sidekick and announcer and cosplayer in the zonks. It made it's debut on NBC but by 1968 it moved to ABC and when I return, how one hat attracted attention which led to something and a problem about the host.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n-1BuWSXVE

Per usual, we tell you what the results to our last Buzzr Beater question which was....

Admit it. Who is your favorite Match Game semi-regular?

The winner turned out to be Garry Burghoff with 4, 2nd going to Betty White who should've been won with 2 and 1 going to Fannie Flagg. We'll give you the question after we tell you more on Deal.

(song fades out)

With the show still on NBC, one lady was dressed in a hat got Monty's attention. Later on......this happened......

Before you know it, it was a Halloween party every day. People dressed up got the attention of Monty Hall and until 1977 in both ABC & syndication, the show exploded into popularity before TPIR came in 1972 to rival that.

LMAD was revived in 1980, in Canada, back in 1984-86 in the US, 1990 in Florida under Bob Hilton as host, 2003 as Billy Bush and primetime and since 2009 with Wayne Brady. Today, LMAD continues to be a daytime hit now paired with TPIR on CBS and is the only Hatos-Hall program now owned by Fremantle. But people want to know, what is the Monty Hall Problem? Many in high school and college have tackled it and now we're giving it to you.

Now the Buzzr Beater question: If I were to go on LMAD, I would win........what? Answer that on the right side of the blog. 2 weeks will be your time limit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zdskrneOPU

And that's going to close the curtain on a classic luck-based game.  If there is any questions about the show, or would like to suggest a show or a host, please reach me on Facebook at : Pierre Jason Kelly, or @Johnny_Arcade on Twitter and we'll explain. Until then, it's PK signing off and we'll see you.....@ The.....

Paula Rhodes: Nearly live from Periscope Plaza just outside the cell phone store where a costume store used to be, it's @ The Buzzr. Now here he is, the master of everything buzz, the man who wouldn't draw a blank to get his ex-girlfriend's attention, Pierre.......KELLY!

Me: Hey everyone and this is @ The Buzzr. Welcome to the premiere episode of a series in which we'll get to know Buzzr in a certain way. We'll dsicuss your favorite game shows, the hosts who do it and the people that make a classic game show....well, classic. So sit back, grab a snack and get ready, you're @ The Buzzr with the first subject....

Match Game has held a history starting in 1962 on NBC. All it did was have you & 2 stars match answers to reach a certain score to win the game. Today, we'll focus on the 1973-82 version.

When CBS had a revival in Match Game after TPIR went on the air in 1972, the concept was to have 2 players on one side and 6 celebrities to match answers in 2 rounds to have one person win $5000. At first, it sounded like a good idea to have Family Feud-style questions in its early years, but once it became humorous, it was more funny & raucous at times. With remakes as one-half of a particular hybrid with the Hollywood Squares in 1983, another with Ross Shafer in 1990 and Michael Burger in 1998, it seemed that the humor in those remakes were a bit staler to watch. But with Gene Rayburn's classic version, it was okay with the program once being the #1 daytime show at the time. When I return, we'll look at the classic panel and a new addition that left one panelist behind.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n-1BuWSXVE

Right now, we have to give you the results to our Buzzr Beater question. I will explain why in a minute. The question was.....

Finish the Following sentence: "I Like Buzzr because of..."

Well, only one chimed in with the classic game shows. We'll get to our Buzzr beater question after we reveal more of MG's legacy....

The real thing why Match Game became successful was its panel. Starting 1st, it was the male person. Usually Gary Burghoff or somebody else. 2nd & 3rd positions went to Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly. The real reason they were part of the panel is because they were like Burns & Allen. These 2 really stuck it out until the very end. The 4th position went to a young starlet who tells little jokes, but get answers quickly. The 5th would be Richard Dawson. Many contestants in the head-to-head match prior to 1978 chose him to help players win a lot of dough which lead to being the widely picked panelist in the group. The 6th would be a semi-regular like for instance Betty White or Fannie Flagg, but gets a more humorous answer. By 1978, things changed....

The invention of the Starwheel helped contestants double the money. It led to Richard Dawson's departure because he was doing Family Feud at the time, and the show was off the air by 1979. But syndication didn't give up hope for it. With the addition of a weekly PM show starting in 1975, 1979-82 was the time in which a syndicated version was shown. There were plans for a 1985 version, but Gene Rayburn refused to do it because tabloids revealed his age at the time, so it was brought back in reruns with nighttime TPIR in. But the 1973-82 version is something we can all remember.

Now the Buzzr Beater question:

Admit it. Who is your favorite Match game semi-regular. Not regulars, semi-regular. The panelists who appear from time to time. You have 2 weeks to answer it. It'll be on the right side of the blog.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zdskrneOPU

And that's it. Thanks for being part of a journey through a funny 70's game show. If there is any questions about the show, or would like to suggest a show or a host, please reach me on Facebook at : Pierre Jason Kelly, or @Johnny_Arcade on Twitter and we'll explain. Until then, it's PK signing off and we'll see you.....@ The.....

Episode Zero

THE WILTON-NORTH BULIDING
2:45 P.M.
13th FLOOR
PIERRE KELLY'S OFFICE

(door opens)

Me: (on phone) No, No, listen here, Christa Nannos is being popular in Grimsborough. That's why she got 3 #1 smash hit singles out on the GrimBoard music charts and she is the life of the party at karaoke on weekends. Yeah, when she comes in, everybody turns Paula's Place into a sold out crowd. The waiting list turns into a standing room only crowd.....listen, I'll call you back when I clock out, I got something to do, okay?

(hits red button on smartphone)

Hello, my name is Pierre Kelly. You may know me from GSN The Know, A weekly newsmagazine that I host about the world of GSN from the offices to what you watch on TV. Every now & then, I talk about Buzzr, and it's been 4 months and it'll be 5 in October. But I wanted to do something different to go on top of my weekly blog. Introducing.....

@ The Buzzr.

A bi-weekly blog about the world of Buzzr from a fan's point of view.

Starting on October 13th, we will talk about your favorite game shows, the hosts and the special weeks Buzzr has brought to us. This will be your history place for game shows. We'll examine the gameplay, find out things you didn't know about your favorite game show legends and maybe you'll find out what a game show is like back then.

And it'll all be from the Periscope Plaza. I checked out the place and it is fantastic. Take a look around, you get to hear Dina Layzis' singing scopes or Matthew Santoro's Q&A sessions from fans, but that has nothing to do with it. I'll be on the desk behind a huge window with the Periscope logo on the far right. Also, my announcer for the blog is someone you should recognize from "The New Adventures of Peter & Wendy." I'll reveal it to you next month.

In addition, there is a "Buzzr Beater" question, And I put one up right now. It's on the right of your blog.

And there it is. Your first look at "@ The buzzr." Join us in October and see where the play is. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go play some Hearthstone.....alone.
